Conservation at the Venice Area Audubon Society

Conservation is integral to the Venice Area Audubon Society mission and our efforts center on four areas.

Rookery Park Habitat

Venice Area Audubon Society volunteers collaborate with Sarasota County to enhance and maintain the area around the Rookery Park and Venice Audubon CenterVolunteers are always welcome to help with basic gardening tasks such as planting, weeding, and garden maintenance.

  • Pollinator Garden
  • Tree thicket and understory project
  • Habitat planning and maintenance in coordination with Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Department

Community Science

Through participation in annual community science projects, Venice Area Audubon adds critical data to state and national bird censuses. Our annual projects include:

Bird Stewardship

Venice Area Audubon Society members volunteer as monitors for several Audubon Florida bird stewardship projects. New volunteers are welcome for these seasonal programs. Training is provided by Audubon Florida. Please click the links for more information.

Advocacy & Networking

The Venice Area Audubon Society Board of Directors appoints representatives to the following regional and local conservation organizations and engages in and supports ad hoc advocacy on issues involving local, state, and national conservation concerns and initiatives.

How You Can Help

  • Volunteer with Venice Area Audubon Society
    • Sign up to help with the annual Christmas Bird Count in December
    • Join the Purple Martin volunteers to set up and monitor nests (January – July)
    • Become a weekly Rookery Watch volunteer (December – March)
    • Help maintain the Pollinator Garden and other gardening projects on Volunteer Saturdays, 9:00-11:00 AM on the 2nd Saturday of every month
  • Join one of Audubon Florida’s bird stewardship volunteer opportunities to monitor bird species in the Venice area.
  • Plant native plants in your home garden to support birds and other wildlife.
  • Subscribe to Audubon Florida’s Advocate newsletter to stay abreast of important environmental issues.
  • Visit and learn about the importance of natural environments in parks and recreation areas to be a better advocate for preserving wilderness spaces for wildlife.
