Venice Area Audubon Society and Lemon Bay Environmental Park educator Tish Sacks will be our host for this special outing to view several active bald eagle nests within Lemon Bay Environmental Park.
The walk is about 90 minutes to two hours, depending on how fast people walk. The terrain is flat but uneven and may be damp. Good shoes, water, a hat, and bug spray are recommended. Tish will bring a spotting scope as a supplement to everyone’s binoculars.
We will attempt to visit at least two bald eagle nests, with a possibility for a third. All three nests are currently active, so we will be very quiet and cautious in our approach so as to not overly impact each nest. To see all three nests it is approximately a 3.5 mile round trip, however, anyone can opt to head back from our stopping point after the 2nd nest, which is about .7 miles from the parking lot.
Other birds abundant in the park include several types of woodpecker, great horned owls, red-shouldered hawks, belted kingfishers, and a large variety of warblers and wading birds. The park contains several different habitats, including pine flatwoods, mixed hardwood hammock and mangrove forest.
Meet outside Lemon Bay Environmental Park Visitor Center. Restrooms are available at the Visitor Center.
